Can anyone explain Romans 5:17-18?

i just don't get how atonement/ propitiation works... How did the whole human race fall through one man's sin? (i understand that we all sin, but the Bible says we all fell in the original sin with adam and eve.) Likewise, how can our sins be placed on one man, Christ, so that we can be reconciled to God?
